EDMONTON -- Geoffrey Pearson, National President of the UNAC and son of former Prime Minister of Canada, Lester B. Pearson, will be in Edmonton Monday, October 22, 2001 to speak to the UNAC Branch members, the media, and any interested members of the public, about the United Nations and the current terrorism crisis. Details are as follows:

GEOFFREY ARTHUR HOLLAND PEARSON, O.C.
Geoffrey Pearson was born in Toronto, December 25, 1927, and educated at the University of Toronto and at Oxford University. He joined the Department of External Affairs of Canada in 1952. In Ottawa, Geoffrey Pearson served in a range of senior assignments in the Department of External Affairs, including Chairman of the Policy Analysis Group, Director-General of the Bureau of United Nations Affairs, and Advisor on Disarmament and Arms Control Affairs. He held diplomatic appointments at the Canadian Embassies in Paris, and Mexico City, and at the High Commission in New Delhi. From 1980 to 1983, he served as Canada’s Ambassador to the USSR.
In late 1983, Geoffrey Pearson was appointed as a Special Representative of the Prime Minister for arms control, and in 1984 he was seconded to the Canadian Institute for International Affairs. In January 1985 he was appointed as the first Executive Director of the Canadian Institute for International Peace and Security, where he served for six years.
Among current activies, Geoffrey Pearson is President of the United Nations Association in Canada and serves on several NGO Boards of Directors.
Geoffrey Pearson is married to Senator Landon Pearson, and they have five children.
