The United Nations Association in Canada is a small non-governmental organization whose primary focus is educational outreach to Canadians in order to foster an understanding of and support for the United Nations system in this country.
We’re always grateful for people to help with our work. However, due to limited resources we don’t always have the space to accommodate such generous offers. Please check the volunteer section of the branch website and the UNA-Canada’s national website’s volunteer section for possible opportunities and the contact information.
If you are currently living outside Canada, but are looking to volunteer with a United Nations Association (UNA), we suggest you check the World Federation of the United Nations Associations (WFUNA) website for the nearest UNA and branch. Additionally, UNA-Canada’s list of WFUNA countries is available in English and French.

GOVERNMENT PLACEMENT ASSISTANCE
The United Nations system operates under a quota process with respect to permanent staffing to ensure that all member states are adequately represented in the international civil service. The UN also tends to confer with the various governments to check on potential candidates whose names may come through other channels for consideration for various positions. In concert with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the International Programs Directorate of the Public Service Commission of Canada is responsible for identifying positions in all international organizations, including the UN system, of interest to Canada and especially those which could be available in terms of country quota allocations. They will then submit names of highly qualified Canadians to compete for those openings. Positions filled through this route normally require a minimum of 10 years professional experience and an advanced university degree. Qualified individuals interested in being considered for positions may send a résumé directly to any UN office, but they should also submit a copy of their résumé to:

The United Nations also posts job openings through a variety of channels. Each Agency and Programme handles much of its own recruitment so there is not a single point of contact. You can explore the UN system via its general web site at www.un.org.
You might also like to make contact with CANADEM (Canadian Resource Bank for Democracy and Human Rights). Its mandate is to create and manage a resource bank of Canadians with skills in areas such as human rights, peacebuilding or democracy, and serve as a civilian standby mechanism for the UN and other international agencies conducting field operations. Individual Canadians can use CANADEM as a way to be considered for international placements.

I am interested in a membership with UNAC. How do I get one?
Membership in our organization is open to anyone interested. As declared in UNAC´s official brochure, there is no set membership fee. However, because UNAC relies on membership donations to continue its important work, we encourage members to give as generously as they can.
We want all interested Canadians to become members, regardless of financial situation. We suggest a minimum donation of $25 for new members and $15 for students. Those who can afford more, please help by giving more. If you cannot afford to donate the full amount, please give what you can. Tax receipts will be issued for all donations of $15 and up. UNAC membership automatically entitles members to the benefits of their local branch. In Edmonton, we will keep you updated and informed as to what we do and aim to do and how you may be involved if you choose to be.

- Each year members have access to a copy of UNAC´s Annual Report, giving a full overview of activities and programs.
- Members are invited to participate (and vote) as part of Edmonton’s branch.
- Members with email are eligible to participate in a "UNAC-Discuss" national listserve.
- Members are invited to attend and participate in Annual General Meetings at both the national and local levels.
- Members are encouraged to become active volunteers within UNAC
- Membership donations of $15 and up are receiptable for tax purposes.
There are several ways of obtaining a membership. You can go to our national website to complete the online form, fill it out and send it in to the National Office (900-130 Slater Street, Ottawa, ON K1P 6E2) with your donation or fax it with your credit card information to (613) 563-2455. Alternatively, you can obtain a membership form from any member of the branch, or at any branch activity, fill it out and send it in to the National Office with your donation.
